Skagerrak surf guide

Skagerrak is a unique surf spot located on the only stretch of coast in Sweden that gets some sort of Atlantic and North Sea groundswell. It's situated northwest of Goteborg, surrounded by an archipelago of islands which makes it a bit tricky to navigate. If you don't have local knowledge, you might struggle to find the best waves here. Hidden gems are scattered around, like Hummervik on Öckerö and the island of Rörö, which can be worthwhile in strong SW to NW winds. Also, keep an eye on the islands near Strömstad like Nord-Koster; they can offer some good sessions with the right conditions.

When it comes to surfing, Skagerrak works best with swell coming from the west, although it can also handle swells from the south and northwest. It can manage swell sizes starting from around 1ft (0.3m), breaking over uneven reef and sand. You'll find both left and right waves here, which provides variety for surfers of different preferences. The surf is suitable for beginners, making it a good spot if you're still getting the hang of things. For the best experience, aim for low to mid tide, and you might want to check conditions when the wind is coming from the east.

Since Skagerrak is part of an archipelago, being on the move and knowing the area can really enhance your surf trip. With its shallow reefs and varying sandbanks, the spot can be quite dynamic, so be ready to adapt your plans based on the daily conditions. Local surfers are usually friendly, so don’t hesitate to ask around for tips on the best spots when you’re out there.
