Skeleton Bay surf guide

Skeleton Bay is a unique surf spot located on the sand spit that leads to Pelican Point, near Walvisbaai. This remote location requires a bit of a trek, but it's worth it for the chance to ride some incredible waves. The beach curves just right, creating the perfect angle for a famous left-hand wave that can be downright insane. Just be aware that the conditions can be fickle, and you’ll need to plan your visit carefully to hit it at the right time.

The wave here is best when the swell direction comes from the SouthWest, handling sizes around 4ft (1.2m). When it's on, surfers can enjoy lengthy rides down the beach on fast, peeling barrels. The wave breaks over sand, which can make for a softer landing. For those looking to really take on Skeleton Bay, it’s important to be an expert, as the waves can be heavy and require precise timing. The ideal wind direction is from the East, and the waves work well during low, mid, and high tide, giving some flexibility in your surf sessions.

Keep in mind that the beach here has a lot of drift, so expect to do some walking back after your sessions, especially with the wind picking up sand. The area is also home to seals, and you might encounter jellyfish from time to time, so keep an eye out while you're enjoying the surf.
