South Bay, Pingtan Island surf guide

South Bay, located on Pingtan Island, is a popular surf spot that attracts both local and visiting surfers. The spot is situated about a 10-minute drive east of the town, just south of Pingtan Bay, and offers a mix of surfable waves. The accessibility of the area improved after the bridge to Xiaoshandong was completed in 2010, making it easier for surfers to reach the spot. While the setting is nice, you might find the surf conditions to be a bit hit or miss depending on the day.

When it comes to surfing at South Bay, several waves can be found both north and south of a big rock in the middle of the bay. It features decent lefthanders beside the rocks and some righthanders that come through when the tide drops out at about 7 meters. The waves can handle swells from 1 foot (0.3 meters) and up, with optimal swell direction coming from the Northeast. The break mainly happens over an uneven reef and sand, catering to different wave types, including beach breaks. Although you can find rideable waves at high, mid, and low tides, the conditions are typically better with high tide. Also, this spot works well with onshore winds from the east and northeast, making for a more consistent experience during the winter months.

Beginners will find South Bay to be manageable, as the waves are suitable for those still getting the hang of it. However, keep in mind that there are rocks close to the shore, so it’s good to stay aware of your surroundings. If you're planning to surf here, make sure to check the tides and wind conditions beforehand to make the most of your session.
