South Carolina Avenue surf guide

South Carolina Avenue is a surf spot that offers a mix of waves for different skill levels. It’s located near a wooden groin that helps shape the breaks, making it a decent spot for riders. Access to the beach is easy, but be warned—finding parking can be a bit of a hassle since metered parking is limited. The local vibe is usually mellow to moderate, but expect some crowds, especially on good days.

When it comes to the surf, South Carolina Avenue generally has good rights and lefts. It’s best when you have an east to northeast swell, with northwest winds helping to keep conditions clean. The waves can range from around waist high (about 1 meter) to well overhead (around 3 meters), so there’s something for everyone, from beginners to experts. Be cautious on big days, as paddling can get tough. The bottom is mostly sand, which helps with those beach breaks and jetty waves. Keep in mind that while it’s usually pretty average compared to other spots in the region, it can get fun when the conditions come together.

In terms of hazards, watch out for the shallow areas and rip currents, especially near the south end of the beach by Central Pier during big northeast swells. It’s good to surf here from September through March, and you can ride a variety of boards including shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, and even bodyboards. The crowd factor is moderate, so you might want to arrive early to snag a good spot in the lineup.
