South Island surf guide

South Island is located to the south of Winyah Bay and is quite undeveloped. This spot is only accessible by boat, making it a less crowded option for surfers. It’s somewhat shielded on northeast swells due to sandbars but is well-exposed to southeasterly hurricane swells. If you're looking for more information, you might want to check out the Yawkey Wildlife Center.

The surf here usually ranges from waist to overhead high (about 1 to 2 meters). It handles swells from the southeast and east, especially from E-NE to SE directions. You can expect good beach breaks over sand, with both left and right waves. The ideal wind directions are from the west and NW, and during the best tides, low to mid work well. This spot can cater to all levels, but it’s great for intermediates and experts, especially during late summer to early fall and early spring. Boards like shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish, and even SUPs can be used here.

With access being a bit tricky, the crowd factor is pretty much non-existent, so you’ll likely have plenty of space to do your thing. The environment is generally clean. Just be aware that it can be sharkier than average and there are strong currents near the inlets, so caution is key if you’re out here alone.
