Spanish Bay, also known as South Moss Beach, is a scenic surf spot located along the stunning 17 Mile Drive. It offers a few different breaks and is reached by paying a toll to drive through the exclusive Spanish Bay Golf Course & Resort. The atmosphere here is laid-back, making it a chill spot for surfers looking to enjoy the waves while soaking in the coastal views.
The waves at Spanish Bay can be quite decent, especially when the swell is hitting from the Northwest. It typically handles swell sizes well up to about 3 feet (roughly 0.9 meters), making it a good option for intermediate surfers. You'll find a mix of lefts and rights here, with the northernmost break called Dunes offering consistent right-handers over a sandy bottom. Moving south, there's a beach break often referred to as Cobblestones, which can be powerful but usually works best when it's small and clean. At the far south end is South Moss, where the waves can pack a punch, especially with lower tides. Expect some fun peaks that might mush out as they get closer to shore. The best winds come from the Southeast, and the conditions can be pretty good during low to mid tides.
If you're planning to visit, remember that it's a pay-to-access spot, so be prepared for the entrance fee. The area is surrounded by beautiful scenery, which makes for a nice day out in the water. Just keep in mind it's best suited for surfers with some experience due to the varying wave conditions and the nature of the breaks.
