Overview
Spits is a left-hand reef break named for the long, occasionally spitting lefts that peel down it. It can be a bit average on an off day, but when it lines up the walls and shoulders leave plenty of room to turn. You can pick it out easily from Gleesons Landing, a rippy, sharky stretch of coast that hides a few other breaks worth hunting down.
When It Works
The reef pulls in swell from south through southwest, though a west swell is the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, breaking over a mix of uneven reef and sand. Expect a moderately consistent break that shows up often enough to be worth checking.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east offshore wind to clean things up. Spits works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The wave suits intermediate surfers comfortable reading a reef, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.

There's a car park with free parking, plus camping nearby if you want to stick around for the next swell.
