St Mikes surf guide

St Mikes is a well-known surf spot that attracts a decent crowd, especially when the waves are up. It’s a mix of reef and beach break, making it a bit of a varied surf experience. The spot is pretty reliable and can hold some solid swells, particularly in the winter. When it’s firing, surfers flock here to take on the consistent waves, but it’s worth noting that conditions can change quickly, so being aware of what’s happening is important.

This place works best with southwesterly swells and can handle sizes up to around 2 feet (0.6 meters). When the swell hits, you'll find right-hand point breaks, and it can get quite exciting as it barrels over the rock ledge before reaching the sandy beach. Ideal conditions happen with low to mid tides, and the preferable wind direction is from the west. It’s a pretty suitable spot for intermediate surfers, so if you're looking to hone your skills, this is a good place to practice.

Don’t forget, timing the jump off the rocks is key, especially if you’re heading into the water during a busy session. The beach break also works when there’s some northeast swell, but keep in mind that the conditions can get a bit murky if there’s been recent rain. So, check the weather before you head out for a session.
