Steps has a few moods and once the rapid drop take-off is negotiated, it will wall and quite often stay overfed till the channel. This makes it a favourite with cruisers who don't want to take on the crowds nearby. Further out is the more challenging Evo's, which shifts across the shallow shelf at speed, squeezing off the odd barrel. Meanwhile, on the inside of Steps is Sparrows, another protuberance of uneven shelf that has the potential to be the best barrel-ride of the lot in small medium SW swells and N winds. All 3 breaks need mid to high tides to make them break and or safe.
It's always a bit better than it looked from way up at the car park lookouts. Beware coming in and over the shelf at high tides and trying to reach the steps when it's got some size.
