Stone Island surf guide

Stone Island, also known as Isla de la Piedra, is not far from the lively beaches of Mazatlan. It's only a quick ten-minute ferry ride across the harbor, yet it feels a lot more remote and chill. Once you land, you’ll be welcomed by a long stretch of golden beach that seems to go on forever, perfect for some relaxation after surfing.

The surf at Stone Island offers a mix of options. You've got sandy beach breaks and a rare right-hand point at Escollera. It can handle swells ranging from 4 feet (1.2 meters) to 10 feet (3 meters), making it suitable for various skill levels, from beginner to expert. The waves come in from different directions including South, SouthEast, and SouthWest. Depending on the tide, you can catch some fun waves at low to mid, mid, or even high tides, but keep in mind, the point can get a bit rocky. Wind from the North to NorthEast is ideal for a fun surf session, and when the swell is on, be prepared to do some duck-diving.

Since the spot is close to Mazatlan, it's worth staying the day after some solid surf sessions to enjoy the laid-back beach vibe. The crowd is pretty spread out, but respect the local surfers who hang out there. Remember to bring your board of choice, whether it's a shortboard, fish, funboard, or longboard. Stone Island is best from April to October, so plan your trip accordingly!
