Sumpters is a surf spot known for its long walling right reef breaks. It's got some barrel sections that can be fun for those who are up for it. The water is a bit deeper here compared to other nearby reefs, which makes for an easier paddle out due to a deep-water gully that you can use to your advantage. It’s not as crowded as some other places, but you can still expect a decent number of surfers in the water.
The optimal swell direction for Sumpters is from the SouthWest, but it also handles swells coming from the South and West. You can expect good surf when the swell hits around 3 feet (about 1 meter). The waves tend to break over an uneven reef, so keep that in mind when you're out there. Ideal conditions come with a NorthEast wind and low to mid tide, which makes it a decent option if you want to avoid chaos. It's best suited for intermediate surfers, so make sure you're comfortable before paddling out.
Access is a bit of a trek, as you'll need to park respectfully in Overton and then walk down to the beach. The walk can feel long, but it's part of the experience. Just remember to paddle out in that deep gully to make it easier on yourself. While the spot can get crowded at times, it’s worth checking out when conditions align.
