Sunset Beach is a well-known surf spot located past Kammieland, featuring a fun near-shore peak opposite Kammies Market. This beach curves northwards and is home to several surf sections like Vals, Inside Bowl, West Peak, Middles, and Sunset Point. The area offers something for all kinds of surfers, but don’t expect it to always deliver epic conditions. With its various breaks, Sunset can often feel unpredictable and requires a good fit for your abilities.
This spot works best with a northwest swell and can handle wave sizes from 8ft (about 2.4m) to 15ft (about 4.6m). At smaller sizes, a northeast windswell can still provide fun waves at The Point. When the conditions align, overhead and double-overhead swells produce powerful waves that can lead to some serious challenges, especially in the Inside Bowl and West Peak areas. Sunset Beach is known to break over an uneven reef and offers both left and right waves. The most favorable wind directions are east, and it can handle all tide heights, but generally performs best around low, mid, and high tides. It’s important to note that the waves here are more suited for expert surfers, so be ready for a tricky ride.
Getting in and out can be a workout, especially as the swell picks up. Expect a lot of paddling and keep an eye on the currents, particularly during larger swells. The Kammieland Rip can help you get back out to the lineup more easily, but be cautious as it can also drain your energy if you're not careful. For equipment, you can ride shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish, or guns depending on the conditions. Overall, Sunset Beach is a classic spot where you can find a range of waves, but it's best to come prepared and with an understanding of its dynamic nature.
