Sunset Beach, located next to the Chapman River, is a surf spot that often gets some nice peaks, especially when the swell comes from the west and the winds are light. It's a fairly accessible beach that tends to be shielded from south swells by the long peninsula at Geraldton, so while it might not always be firing, you can still find some decent waves. As you head further north, the conditions tend to improve a bit.
The optimal swell direction here is from the southwest, but you can also catch waves coming from the northwest. Sunset Beach can handle swell sizes as small as 2 feet (about 0.6 meters) and the waves break over both uneven reef and sand, creating different types of breaks. You'll find both left and right waves, which is great for all kinds of surfers. This spot works well with east winds and can be surfed during low, mid, and high tide. It's a good place for beginners looking to get comfortable on the board.
Keep in mind that some beach armoring is present, which is causing erosion issues closer to town. It's something to be aware of when you're out there. Despite that, Sunset Beach remains a popular choice for local surfers and visitors alike, thanks to its varied wave conditions and beautiful surroundings.
