Sunset Reef surf guide

Sunset Reef is located at the end of the Mal Pais coast road and offers a fast and powerful left reef break. It has a bit of a wild vibe thanks to the rough lava reef beneath the surface. It’s not for everyone, as you really need to know what you’re doing to handle this spot correctly. The scenery is nice, but the surf can be quite challenging, and it’s important to be patient if you want to catch a wave here. The best conditions can be found at low to mid tide, especially when the swell is big in town.

The surf here is really geared towards experienced surfers. The waves break over uneven reef, creating some intense conditions. The optimal swell direction is from the southwest, but it can also work with south and west swells. Sunset Reef can handle swell sizes starting at around 4ft (1.2m), but when it gets going, it can really pack a punch. If you’re up for it, expect a solid left that offers a bit of everything: a drop into the first section followed by a fast ride through a barrel, and then you’re looking for the safety of the channel at the end. Just remember, this spot is only for the experts who can navigate the lineup properly.

For the best experience, you’ll want to surf when the wind is coming from the east. Make sure you’re prepared for a true surfing challenge with a solid skill set, as this spot is not forgiving to those who aren’t up to the task. If you can keep your cool and respect the lineup, you just might score some unforgettable waves.
