Sunzal surf guide

Sunzal is a well-known surf spot in El Salvador, located near the popular village of El Tunco. Regularly packed with surfers, it attracts both locals and travelers, especially on weekends. The surf scene is vibrant, and if it’s flat here, it’s flat everywhere. The area has transformed over the years, going from a remote spot to a trendy vacation destination that offers a laid-back vibe during the week and a lively atmosphere on weekends.

The waves at Sunzal are quite consistent, handling swell sizes from around 1.2 meters to 3 meters (4ft to 10ft) with most action in the SouthWest direction. It shapes up best with low to mid tides, and the right-hand point breaks are ideal for a variety of board types including shortboards, funboards, longboards, and fishes. The bottom is made up of boulders, so be mindful when paddling out. When the conditions are right, you can score long rides that are fun for both beginners and intermediates, although the waves can be a bit slopey and shifty at times. The light North winds typically help keep the face clean and enjoyable to ride.

To reach Sunzal, it's a straightforward trip from La Libertad, taking about half an hour on a bus for less than a dollar. Just keep in mind that it can get crowded, especially with a mix of skill levels in the water. The local vibe is generally mellow, but weekends can bring a party atmosphere as surfers from all walks of life converge on the lineup for a taste of what Sunzal has to offer.
