More about Surf Beach surfspot

Isolated, gnarly beachbreak which never goes completely flat. Shapely during peaky swells with SE winds. Very hollow and usually difficult to paddle out. Never crowded, for good reason. Sharky and loads of bad currents. Incoming and high tides work best; harsh rip currents with outgoing tides.

Located at the end of Highway 246. Do not walk north or south of the beach in front of the train station; you will be fined. These areas are strictly off-limits from March 1 to September 30 to allow nesting for endangered snowy plover dune birds. As of February 2002, all public access to Surf Beach has been sealed off by the U.S. Air Force. Quoting September 11 and endangered bird nesting site protection as primary reasons, it has created a huge surfing sanctuary for the handful of crewcuts that surf on Vandenberg Air Force Base.
