Taapuna is a hollow, technically demanding reef left near Papeete, on Tahiti. Known as the original Tahitian tube garden, it breaks over live coral and has long pulled in surfers chasing a dredging barrel a step down from Teahupoo. The wave is perfect but variable, with technical sections that reward skill and confidence.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), and it lines up best on a southwest (SW) swell. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, holding size well and running from head high up to much bigger. It's a consistent left and is most reliable through autumn, winter, and spring.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind to groom it clean. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a shortboarder's wave, technical through its variable sections, so it suits intermediate surfers who paddle out with confidence. Expect a busy lineup when it's firing, and give the local crew the respect they expect in the water.
Access
Getting out means a boat ride or a 20-minute paddle from shore. The bottom is live coral and sharks are a real hazard, so treat the reef with care.
