Tamarack Avenue Surf Forecast Guide

Tamarack Avenue is a shifting beachbreak at the foot of its namesake street in Carlsbad, where sand and boulder banks beside a small rivermouth throw up plenty of fun left and right peaks. Cleanly lined-up walls are rare, but the peaks are playful and forgiving enough for beginners and intermediates.

When It Works

The break draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest (SW) the best match. It is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and can turn on at any time of year. On bigger swells, a righthander starts to break off the south side of the river and wraps toward the beach around the southern jetty.

Wind and Tide

Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean up the peaks. The break works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

Almost anything goes here, from shortboards, fish, and funboards to longboards, bodyboards, skimboards, and bodysurfing. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it is working, with an atmosphere that can feel a little reserved.

Access

The break sits right in front of a car park with free parking at the end of Tamarack Avenue. Restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and a surf shop are all close by.
