Te Akau South surf guide

Te Akau South is a surf spot located on a wild stretch of coast that's often less crowded than nearby locations. It's a bit remote, giving you a chance to escape the busier beaches. The drive to get there takes you through some nice scenery, and once you arrive, you often find it pretty empty, unless Raglan is small and everyone is looking for waves.

The surf here can be decent, especially when the swell hits from the SouthWest or NorthWest. It handles swell sizes starting from 1 ft (about 0.3 meters), but you'll want to check it mainly at high tide for the best wave shape. The waves break over sand, creating beach breaks that offer both left and right rides. It’s a spot suited for intermediate surfers, so if you're still learning the ropes, this may be a good challenge for you.

When the conditions are right—light swell and east winds—you can experience some fun sessions. The rivermouth helps break up the close-outs, providing a bit more variety in your ride. Just be sure to check the tides and winds for optimal conditions before paddling out.
