The Back Porch surf guide

The Back Porch is a surf spot located midway between Sandpiper Cove and Two by Fours. You can find it by looking for a low block building on your right after passing Sandpiper Cove. There's a parking area along the road, but be careful about where you park. Once you get to the beach, you might see a buoy marking the outflow from the nearby pumphouse. If not, just look for it about 250 yards out. This spot is known for waves mostly during the winter months, featuring a big outside take-off and hollow inside sections.

The surf here works best with swells coming from the South, South-Southeast, South, South-Southwest, and Southwest, and it can handle swell sizes from around 4 feet to 10 feet (approximately 1.2 to 3 meters). The waves usually break over hard-packed sand and offer both right and left wave directions. For those paddling out, it's not for the faint of heart; strong paddlers are recommended. The best wind directions are from the North-Northwest, North, North-Northeast, Northeast, and East-Northeast. The preferred tide height is low to mid, making it a spot good for various skill levels, including beginners, intermediates, and experts.

Accessing The Back Porch involves a decent walk from the parking area, and while the crowds can be moderate, there's a strong local vibe, so it's good to bring your best war face. This surf spot is part of the beautiful Emerald Coast, known for its striking water color, and does have a few hazards to keep in mind like currents and a powerful shorebreak. Best seasons to catch waves here are fall, winter, and spring, especially during hurricane activities. You can ride shortboards or guns when you're out there.
