The Bluff - WA surf guide

The Bluff, also known as Red Bluff, is a well-known surf spot in Western Australia that draws surfers looking for a challenge. It’s located in a more remote area, which gives it a wild atmosphere. While it's famous for its fast waves, it’s not the most consistent spot in the region. Surfers will notice that the crowd can be thick here, and there’s a strong local scene. If you're planning a trip, be ready to navigate the pecking order and show respect for the locals.

This spot really shines with a southwesterly swell coming in at around 5-6ft (1.5-1.8 meters), but it can handle sizes down to about 4ft (1.2 meters). When the waves are right, they break over a reef known as DeadCoral, offering some thrilling lefts. Expect a steep drop off the take-off, leading into some serious barrels. For the best conditions, aim for a south-easterly wind and try to hit the waves during low, mid, or high tide. It’s important to note that this spot is recommended for expert surfers only, as the fast and demanding waves require solid skills.

Before you head out, make sure to gear up with a helmet and booties. The shallow bottom is covered in urchins, so it’s best to be prepared. Also, be sure to bring all your supplies, as the remote location means you’ll want to be self-sufficient during your time at The Bluff.
