The Crack surf guide

The Crack is a surf spot located on the south side, offering a mix of right point breaks and some interesting waves. It’s known for its speed, particularly at high tide. While it can get crowded, especially with spectators interested in the local wildlife, surfers tend to spread out enough to find their space.

The surf here is pretty decent, especially when the swell is coming from the south or southwest. It handles swell sizes of around 3ft (about 0.9 meters) well, and the waves generally break over an uneven reef. Expect a right-hand wave that can get quite vertical and fast, making it suitable for intermediate surfers. Conditions are best when the wind is coming from the northwest, and you can catch good waves at low, mid, or high tide. Just keep in mind that the suck-rock take-off can be a bit tricky, especially at lower tides.

Besides the waves, the area is famous for the penguins, which can be a fun distraction when you’re not surfing. Just be prepared for large crowds, as many come to watch the penguin parade rather than to hit the waves. If you’re looking for a spot with a bit of life around, The Crack might just suit you.
