The Estuary surf guide

The Estuary, also known as La Bocana, is the city break spot for surfers in San Jose Del Cabo. Located on the east side of the beachline in Estero San Jose, it sits in a peaceful park area that is meant to be a wildlife sanctuary. The spot can be tricky due to the local conditions, but it's worth checking out if you’re in the area. It’s generally a hit-or-miss, with some good days being very occasional and dependent on the right conditions.

The waves at The Estuary can reach sizes from around 1.5 meters (5 feet) to 3 meters (10 feet), with ideal swell coming from directions like South and even a bit from East to SouthEast. When it's firing, you might find some epic A-frames that can break both right and left. The beach break works over a sandy bottom, making it suitable for different abilities, from beginners to experts. For the best experience, aim for mid tides and prefer winds from directions like North or the West. The heavy crowd can be a factor, especially when the waves are on, but when it’s average, you might score some lonely waves.

Access is pretty simple; you can park at La Playita or El Presidente and walk down to the spot. It's a good place to suit up with a shortboard or bodyboard, and even for skimboarders looking for some fun. The prime surf seasons here are summer and autumn, so plan your trip accordingly if you want to catch it when it’s decent.
