The Hole surf guide

The Hole is a surf spot located on the west side of Saumang Island, right behind the southern tip of Pagai Selatan. It's known for its unique setup and requires very specific conditions to make it surfable. The area is not for everyone, as the waves can be quite challenging. It's important to know that surfing here is best left to those with experience, as the conditions can change quickly and unpredictably.

This spot mainly breaks left over live coral and works best with a south swell coming in at sizes around 4ft (about 1.2 meters). While it can handle swells from the southwest as well, the south direction is optimal. You'll want to check for northeast winds, or ideally, no wind at all, to get the best ride. It's important to note that the tide can affect your take-off point; the waves tend to break more consistently at low, mid, and high tide, but the inside bowl can be particularly treacherous, especially when the swell is on. Only experts should attempt to ride The Hole, as it can dish out some serious reef rash and gnarly wipeouts.

Getting to The Hole may require a bit of a trek, and the best approach is usually from a backside. If you're not feeling ready for this spot, you might want to check out Disco's on the next island over, which is a better option for less experienced surfers. Remember, with high risks can come high rewards, so choose wisely!
