Overview
The Hook - Sharks Cove is a small point tucked inside the bay near Pleasure Point, with right-hand point waves breaking over uneven reef and sand. It is a pretty, popular wave that can feel mediocre on smaller days, but bigger south swells can turn it into a much better, faster, hollower right. The inside section can sometimes wrap into Sharks Cove, where there can also be a short left.
When It Works
The swell window runs from south through west-southwest to northwest, with southwest as the optimal direction. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. It can lose some size compared with Pleasure Point on northwest swells, while south swells up to a few feet overhead are the standout setup. It is surfable year-round.
Wind and Tide
The cleanest wind is north offshore. East, northwest, and glassy conditions can also be good.
It is best around low tide to mid tide, and a rising tide is better.
Local Tips
The Hook is popular with beginner-to-intermediate surfers, with the main ability fit being intermediate. Shortboards, funboards, fish, and longboards all make sense here.
Crowds can be high on a good day, and the place is extremely popular. The lineup atmosphere is generally friendly, but crowds can make or break the session. Watch for longboarders, kelp, and sharp rocks. Paddling is not too bad.
