The Kom surf guide

The Kom is a surf spot that can handle some decent swell, making it a popular choice for experienced surfers. It's located off a reef, and it generally keeps the waves rolling in consistently, though you shouldn’t expect them to be perfect all the time. The spot is split into Inner and Outer Kom, with each area offering its own unique challenges. The lineup can get a bit crowded, especially with seasoned surfers who are familiar with the often shifting conditions.

Inners tends to offer fun lefts that break over kelp beds, while Outers provides powerful lefts that can catch you off guard. You’ll need to be prepared for a late vertical drop and have some barrel sense if you want to navigate your way to the channel. The best swell direction here is from the west, and it can handle swell sizes up to 6 feet (about 1.8 meters). Although southeast and west swells can also work, you’ll find that the waves here are generally better with a northeast wind. For those looking to catch the best waves, low to mid tides are preferred, keeping in mind that this is a spot meant for expert surfers.

Keep an eye out for rips that tend to increase as you move clear of the harbor, especially as they head towards the impact zone. It's not uncommon to encounter random rogue sets, so staying wide and aware will give you a better shot at avoiding them. The Kom can be unforgiving if you’re not paying attention, but if you’re experienced and ready for a challenge, it can be a rewarding place to surf.
