The LineUp at Wai Kai Surf Forecast Guide

The LineUp at Wai Kai is built around the Wai Kai Wave, a 100-foot-wide deep-water standing wave in the Wai Kai community of Ewa Beach. Created by citywave in partnership with Shane Beschen and run by Surf Park Management, it is as much a social hub as a surf spot, with a 52-acre recreational lagoon, a restaurant, a café, and retail sitting alongside the wave. The pool is well managed and the water clean, and it draws everyone from first-timers to competitors.

When It Works

Being a surf park, it runs year-round, and there is no paddle out to deal with. The wave is endless and fully adjustable, holding glassy shape anywhere from two feet up to head-high, so it suits every skill level on a standard board with fins. There is plenty of room to carve and surf top to bottom, and it peels both left and right over the rock base. It is a genuinely fun wave, great for progression and a serious workout in its own right.

Wind and Tide

The wave works best at high tide, with a rising tide the better call.

Local Tips

The lineup pulls a good mix of beginners, intermediates, and experts, and works for shortboards, fish, funboards, bodyboards, and bodysurfing. Expect a moderately busy lineup that can feel a little reserved; it is lightest on weekdays and picks up through the afternoon and on weekends, with the more advanced crew often turning up in the evening. The surf ops team is quick to help everyone get comfortable with the wave. It pays to ride the boards provided rather than bring your own, and to wear the helmet on offer, since boards can shoot back quickly after a bail.

Access

You will find it in Ewa Beach, about 22 miles from Honolulu. There is a big parking lot, plus two bars, two restaurants, and a range of other activities to round out the day.
