The Main Beach surf guide

The Main Beach, located in the charming town of Hampton Beach, is a sand-bottom beachbreak that attracts surfers with its mellow vibe and decent waves. It’s generally less crowded compared to other spots, especially outside the summer months when tourists flood in. With no major bends or unique features in the coastline, though, it can get a bit messy when the swell picks up. The winter months can be tough here, with icy conditions alongside waves that can close out quickly.

Surfing at Main Beach really shines from late fall to early spring when the conditions align nicely. It can handle swell sizes between about 2 feet (0.6 meters) to 10 feet (3 meters) and picks up swells coming from the east, east-southeast, and southeast. The waves can break both right and left, making it a decent choice for all levels, from beginners to experts. During the right wind conditions, particularly from the southwest to northwest, the surf can be pretty fun. Tides also play a role, with low, mid, and high tides offering different opportunities depending on the day. Board options here vary widely, catering to shortboarders, funboarders, longboarders, fish riders, and bodyboarders alike.

Access to Main Beach is straightforward during the off-season, but if you’re planning to go in summer, it’s best to look elsewhere as surfing is generally frowned upon then. Crowds can be moderate, but the local vibe remains mellow, making it a great spot to relax and enjoy some time in the water. Just keep an eye out for clean-up sets, as they can sweep you unexpectedly closer to the seawall.
