More about The Main Beach surfspot

General: Like The Wall, Main Beach (as in the main beach of the lovely town of Hampton Beach) is another sand-bottom beachbreak. It is slightly less consistent and far less crowded and watched over by the local crew. Absent of any bends, spits or elbows in the coast, Main Beach will become a closed-out mess at any real sniff of solid swell. And when it's winter and there are chunks of ice floating around the lineup, myriad closeouts sucks pretty bad.

And forget trying to go there during the summer months, as surfing is taboo. Instead, Main Beach becomes tourist central. The wave can actually become a great alternative to The Wall during the late fall and early spring months. Pick a peak and paddle out. Tides: All Size: Chest-head high Wind: W Swell: E, ESE, SE Bottom: Sand Paddling: Pretty mellow in the summer but much worse in the winter when cold water and air necessitate full winter gear. Spot Rating: Can be pretty good on the right wind, swell and tide combination.

Beginner to advanced.

Easy in off-season. Forget it in summer.

September through March

Crowd Factor: Moderate. Local Vibe: Mellow.

Fair.

Watch for clean-up sets that can sweep you into seawall.
