The Pass (Byron Bay) surf guide

The Pass at Byron Bay is a popular surf spot renowned for its picturesque setting, lined with pandanus trees and a welcoming vibe. This spot attracts surfers of all levels but can get super crowded, especially on good days. It's known for its consistent waves and the beautiful sandy point that draws in locals and visitors alike. Everyone wants to grab a piece of the action when conditions are right.

This break works best with E and NE swells, offering fun right-handers that can roll in nicely for long rides, sometimes even reaching up to 500 meters. Depending on the swell size, it can handle waves from about 1 foot (0.3 meters) and can still produce something worthwhile even with larger Southern swells, although those can fizzle out a bit more. The Pass generally has lovely, orderly waves, but be mindful of the crowd and the need for a bit of skill when navigating the busier days. The best wind direction is SE, and you can catch decent waves at low, mid, or high tide. It's a decent spot for beginners on mellow days, but definitely keep an eye out for the more advanced surfers as it can get quite hectic.

As you venture into the water, the crowd can be pretty intense, with surfers jockeying for position. Most locals know the drill and often walk back up the point to get back in position after a ride. If you're not comfortable dealing with some crowd chaos, consider heading to Wategoes for a more chill experience. One fun aspect of surfing here is that you might just see some playful dolphin pods joining the scene, adding to the overall atmosphere of The Pass.
