Overview
The Rock is a sand-bottomed beach break on Cheduba island in northern Myanmar, throwing up both lefts and rights. It's the first known surf spot in a remote patchwork of islands and channels, with the strongest regional potential sitting on the Baronga Islands opposite the regional capital, Sittwe.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south through west, with southwest (SW) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Consistency is on the low side, so you'll likely be waiting for the right window rather than scoring on any given day.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean it up. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The waves here stay approachable enough for beginners, and the lineup is quiet when it does turn on.
Access
Getting here is the real challenge. The region is generally off-limits for overland travel, as the government enforces tourist segregation and restricts political discussion between locals and foreigners, so a boat charter is the only realistic way in, and securing the permits is close to impossible. Parking onshore is restricted.
