The Rocks is a unique surf spot that’s not too easy to get to. It’s been part of a Coast Guard base for years, which has kept the area a bit off the beaten path. A walk-in along the beach or inlet takes about half an hour and can be a bit sweaty and buggy. If you’re thinking about taking a boat, it’ll also take about the same time. Just keep in mind that surfing here hasn’t been officially allowed, and the place is heavily monitored by the Coast Guard and security, so don’t be surprised if you get kicked out.
When the conditions are right, The Rocks can actually be a fun spot to surf. Swell typically comes from the East-North-East to South-South-East, handling sizes from around 3ft to 7ft (about 1 to 2.1 meters). The waves break over sand and can offer both right and lefts, ideal for shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, and even bodyboards. Waves are best during mid to high tide, with north-west winds being preferable. It's a spot where beginners through to experts can find something that suits their skill level.
During the autumn and winter months, from September to March, the surf tends to be more consistent. The crowd factor here is generally light, and the local vibe can feel mellow to moderate depending on the day. Watch out for shallow areas and rip currents if you decide to take a dip. Overall, it’s a pretty clean spot and when the swell’s right, it’s worth the trek.
