The South Jetty is a popular surf spot located in Brigantine, known for its shifting peaks and decent waves. It generally gets chest-high to well-overhead surf, making it suitable for intermediate surfers looking for fun sessions. The area is often busy, especially during summertime, but it provides some protection from south winds, giving you a chance to catch good waves even when conditions aren't perfect.
The surf here works best with south swells and northwest winds, especially during mid to high tide. You'll typically find good lefts and even better rights along the beach with peaks that can wedge up outside before forming hollow sections on the inside. The spot can handle swells ranging from about 3 feet (0.9 meters) to 8 feet (2.4 meters), but it struggles with sizes over six feet (1.8 meters). If it’s too big, you might want to consider heading over the bridge to Atlantic City. Bring a shortboard, fish, funboard, or even a longboard for a good mix of waves.
Parking can be tricky in the summer, as the surrounding residential areas usually fill up fast. However, there is year-round access for 4WD vehicles with a paid permit. On top of that, lifeguards keep swimmers away from the surf zone, but be cautious of the local wildlife. The crowd factor is moderate, but it can get heavy during weekends in summer. The best time to surf here is typically from September through March.
