The Wedge surf guide

The Wedge is a surf spot located in Plettenberg Bay, just an hour’s drive from J-Bay. It’s known for its intense and challenging waves, making it a popular choice among experienced surfers. This area provides a range of services and accommodation options, which makes it a good place to visit outside of the busy summer tourist season. Perched north of the Beacon Isle Hotel, The Wedge can turn into a powerful wave monkey when the big southeast and southwest swells roll in and hit the rocks, creating some serious action in the water.

The Wedge handles swell sizes starting from about 0.6 meters (2 ft) and works best with east or southwest swells. You’ll find both left and right beach breaks here, but they're not for the faint of heart. The wave can really ramp up, especially with some nice air-drops and can easily close out. The best time to surf is during low to mid tide, and when northwestern winds are blowing, you’ll get the cleanest conditions. It’s definitely a spot for expert surfers, as the waves can throw some serious sand slammers and require skill to navigate the crowds when it’s firing.

For anyone looking for a change of pace, there’s an old submerged wreck nearby, especially appealing with an easterly swell or a big southern wrap. This area often produces some attractive hollow lefts, giving you another option when you want to mix things up. Just remember, even though The Wedge can be a beast, it's not always going to work, so timing and conditions are key.
