The Witterings is a popular surf spot located along a large sandy beach that stretches for about 4 miles from Wittering to Selsey. It's known for its average waves and many groynes that help to define the area. The location gets quite a bit of attention from surfers coming from London, as well as windsurfers and kiteboarders. Although it rarely has epic days, there are definitely times when it can be fun, especially with a bit of swell.
The surf here tends to be thigh to head high (about 0.6 to 3 meters) and works best with a big southwest swell. The ideal wind direction is from the northeast, and it’s best to surf during high tide for optimal conditions. The waves can break both left and right over a flat sandy bottom. It's a suitable spot for beginners and intermediates looking to ride beach breaks. The surf can close out with larger swells but can also produce long, rolling waves that are a hit with longboarders, especially at low tides.
Access to the beach is easy with a large car park just behind the dunes, which provides enough space for everyone without feeling too cramped, despite its popularity. The vibe is generally relaxed, making it a friendly environment for surfers of all abilities. Winter is the prime season here, particularly from December to February when you’ll find better swells.
