Thorli Beach is located about 30 minutes from ReykjavÃk near Thorlakshofn. This spot features a long crescent of black sand, providing a scenic and isolated environment perfect for a laid-back surf session. While it might not be the most iconic surf destination, it does attract a few locals and families when the weather is nice, making it a decent place to chill for a day.
The surf here picks up well with swells coming from the south, southeast, or southwest, and it can handle sizes around 3 feet (0.9 meters). The waves break mainly over sand, resulting in beach breaks that can produce both left and right waves. It's ideal for beginners, especially during low to mid tides, and when the wind is coming from the northwest. Keep in mind that the conditions can get big and hollow, so be prepared for swirling currents and some duck-diving challenges.
While Thorli Beach is consistent in receiving swells, it’s not always a must-surf spot. The waves can become heavy, which might not be worth the effort some days. If you happen to catch it right, there is sometimes a protected righthander near the harbour wall in the western corner that can be fun when the conditions align. Just be aware that it's more of a spot for those looking for a chill surf day rather than epic sessions.
