Three Points/Marau Point surf guide

Three Points/Marau Point is a surf spot located near Gisborne, New Zealand. It's known for a set of point breaks that create some fun waves, but access can be tricky. You need to get permission to cross private land, and it's about a 2km hike to reach the surf. Many surfers know about it, but not everyone makes the trek.

The spot works best with a southeast swell, but it can handle swells coming from the northeast and south as well. The waves tend to be right-breaking, which makes it great for regular footers. You can expect the swell sizes to vary between 2ft (about 0.6m) and up, and the breaks generally happen over boulders and sand. The best conditions occur with a west wind and during low, mid, or high tide. It’s ideal for expert surfers, as the spot can get tricky, especially when it’s firing.

On the north side, Motuori Island also picks up swells, which can add some variety to your session. Just keep in mind that since this spot isn’t surfed as much due to its access issues, the waves may be less crowded, giving you a chance to enjoy some less busy surf.
