Tonggs is a surf spot located off a small beach near Kalakaua. It’s a pretty chill place for surfers looking to enjoy some waves. You might not find much in the way of amenities, but the vibe is laid-back, and the surf can be fun when the conditions are right. It’s one of those spots that caters to surfers who are still getting the hang of things, but there's also enough going on to keep more experienced surfers interested.
The lefts at Tonggs are beginner-friendly, providing some nice rides with occasional hollow sections as they break over the uneven dead coral. The left tends to fade out in a deeper channel, while the right offers a faster ride before it closes out. This spot works best with swells from the south, southeast, and southwest and can handle swell sizes starting from around 2 ft (0.6 meters). The preferable wind direction is from the north, and it works during low, mid, and high tides. Just keep in mind that further east, you’ll find more challenging waves at Graveyards and Suicides, which can be fun but might require a bit more skill and caution.
Across the channel from the left at Tonggs, there’s Rice Bowl, which offers a sucky right/left combo that can produce tubes and fun sections. While it can be rare and is definitely sought after, be careful, as it breaks over a shallow shelf. Overall, the breaks around Tonggs tend to handle northeast trades better than Cliffs, so it’s worth checking out if you’re in the area.
