Tracks surf guide

Tracks is located where the railway line meets the coast, and it's the first of three decent right-hand point breaks in the area. It's a spot that generally requires a solid swell from the South, ideally with a bit of West in the mix. What sets Tracks apart is that itโ€™s the most sheltered of the bunch, which can make it a bit smaller and slower. Here, you can find some nice tapered walls and lengthy shoulders as you ride down the boulders.

This surf spot handles swell sizes well at around 4 feet (about 1.2 meters), with optimal conditions coming from the South. You might also get decent waves if the swell comes from the Southeast or Southwest. The right-handed waves here are typically best with a North wind and are suitable for intermediate surfers. For the best experience, aim for low to mid tide.

To get there, start from Napier and head north on Pandora Road State Highway 2, then follow onto Meeanee Quay and Main North Road. Keep going on State Highway 2, passing through Wairoa, and when you reach Nuhaka, go straight at the roundabout onto Nuhaka Opoutama Road. You can park near Opoutama beach or at Point Annihilation and take a walk to reach the break. Depending on your preference, you can paddle out from the beach or drift down from Point Annihilation.
