Trails surf guide

Trails is a laid-back surf spot located just west of I-5, about three miles of beachbreak waves at the bottom of the bluffs. It’s one of the more secluded spots around San Diego, giving you a bit of that 'wilderness' vibe. The area feels less crowded than other parts of the coast, making it a nice escape for surfers looking for some space on the waves. Most folks head to Trails 6 and 4, where you’ll find the better chances for decent surf.

For a fun surf session here, the ideal swells come from the Southwest. The waves break over sand, and you can expect to catch both lefts and rights. The best conditions typically hit when the swell sizes are around 1 ft (0.3 meters), so make sure to check the tide; mid tide is usually the sweet spot. When the winds are coming from the Northeast, it can set up some nice rides. Just keep in mind that although it's not a massive wave spot, it can still deliver some enjoyable sessions if the conditions align.

Getting there involves a hike down the bluffs, which helps keep the crowds down a bit. The area is bordered by Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base, so there are stretches of beach where access is limited. This means you'll likely run into some military surfers enjoying their local waves. All in all, if you’re looking for a spot that’s a bit off the beaten path and offers a mix of fun and chill vibes, Trails might just fit the bill.
