Trestles - Lowers surf guide

Trestles - Lowers is one of the most famous surf spots in Southern California. This place is known for its incredible waves and a vibrant surf scene. It's right by the coastline and gets a lot of attention from surfers of all levels. The area can be quite crowded, especially on good days, so be prepared to share the lineup with plenty of others who are also chasing the perfect wave.

The surf here can be pretty exciting. Lowers offers rippable cobblestone peaks with both lefts and rights that can deliver some serious thrill. With the right conditions, swells from the south and southwest can bring waves that range from about shoulder high (1.2 meters) to double overhead (around 3.6 meters). The best conditions usually occur with northeast winds and during low to mid-high tides. The waves break over a mix of sand and rocks, creating options for various styles. It’s a favorite spot for shortboards and fish, attracting intermediate to expert surfers. Just keep in mind that if the wind shifts to the south, the waves can become less forgiving.

Accessing Lowers is pretty straightforward. You can park near the Carl’s Jr. and follow the paved path that leads under the railway trestle to the beach. Be prepared for a bit of a trek if you’re carrying gear. Since this spot is extremely popular, expect a competitive vibe in the water, but most surfers maintain a cordial atmosphere. If you're looking to score quality waves, this is a year-round spot, but it really shines from March to October.
