Tunitas Creek is a surf spot located just south of Martin's Beach, nestled along a stretch of coast that remains mostly empty and a bit tricky to access. This area becomes visible when Highway 1 dips down and crosses the bridge at Tunitas Creek. Look to your right, and you’ll spot a long beach that may seem promising, especially with the right point on the north end.
When it comes to surfing here, Tunitas Creek mainly features beach breaks, and you’ll often find them a bit inconsistent. It can get too big or too windy at times, which can make things less than ideal. However, if you're lucky, you might catch a perfect A-frame wave that can pop up in the middle of the beach. The spot can handle swells from 1 meter (about 3 feet) up to 3 meters (around 10 feet) and works best with swells coming from the W, NW, SW directions. The waves break over both sand and rock, with rights and lefts available. You’ll want to aim for low to mid to high tides and prefer winds from the NE to ESE. This place is suitable for intermediate to expert surfers, and you can ride a range of boards including shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish, and even bodyboards.
Accessing Tunitas Creek involves parking in a dirt lot along Highway 1 and then figuring out your way down the cliff. The crowds can be sparse, and you might find yourself among your own group of surfers, which isn’t a bad thing if you like some space. Just keep in mind, it’s a long walk sometimes, and there can be some sharks in the area. The best time to surf here is between September and May, during the autumn, winter, and spring seasons, when conditions are generally more favorable.
