Overview
Vaihu is an impressive but deceptive left that breaks over uneven reef. It looks inviting, yet unless the swell is over 10 ft the ride stays short, fading into deep water soon after take-off. When it gets bigger it barrels heavily on the outside before shouldering off.
When It Works
Vaihu draws swell from east through south to southwest, and it is usable from 2.4 m / 8 ft to 5.5 m / 18 ft. The wave only comes into its own at size, so the bigger end of that range is where a quick take-off turns into a heavy barrel. Expect moderately consistent surf, so the good windows are there without being an everyday option.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind to groom it. The reef works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave and a favourite tow-in spot for the local chargers, so it rewards experience and the right setup. The lineup tends to stay fairly quiet when it breaks.
