Van Staden's Mouth is a surf spot located near Port Elizabeth, tucked within the scenic Van Stadens Nature Reserve. This spot features a river mouth beach break that can be pretty fun on the right day. However, it's known to get blown out unless the winds are coming from the north, so conditions can be quite hit-or-miss.
When the conditions align, this break handles swell sizes starting from around 1ft (0.3 meters) and works best with a south swell direction. You can expect waves breaking over sand, with both left and right wave directions available. The best time to hit the water is on low to mid tide, and the preferred wind direction is northeast. This spot is generally good for beginners, so it’s a nice place to work on your skills if you’re just starting out.
Keep in mind that because it's in a nature reserve, the environment is pretty stunning, but there have been some reports of non-fatal great white shark incidents in the area. Always stay aware of your surroundings while enjoying the surf.
