Waiapu surf guide

Waiapu is a surf spot located at the mouth of the Waiapu River. It features a mix of sand and shingle bars, creating a unique surf environment. The area is known for being rarely crowded, making it a good choice if you prefer some peace while catching waves. A 4WD can be helpful for getting to the beach, especially since it’s a bit off the beaten path.

The surf here generally suits intermediate surfers. The waves break over sand, producing punchy lefts and rights that can be fun to ride. The best swell direction is from the east, with some good conditions also coming from the northeast and south. Waiapu can handle swell sizes around 2ft (0.6m) but is best when the tide is low or mid-level. If the wind is coming from the northwest, you’ll find even better surfing conditions.

While you won't find a lot of crowds, it’s still a good idea to check the local forecasts before heading out, as the surf can change quickly based on conditions. Overall, it’s a decent spot to spend a day in the water if you're looking for something low-key.
