More about Waipio Valley surfspot

The Hamakua Coast heading NW is a cliff-lined wave desert until the Waipio Valley cuts some relief. Alluring beachbreaks peaks collide with the rivermouth flow that gouges the black sandbars into nice lefts and rights with channels, making it a beginner-friendly spot, but also fun for the big boys. Always picks up the winter N pulses plus the background E windswell, although trades kill it unless they’re proper SE.

The hellish access road is 4WD material or a long walk. Between here and Pololu are a handful of hike in only beaches with adventurous surf like Waimanu, Honopue and Honokane. Keokea Beach Park is also worth a check on the way back to Kohala Lighthouse.
