Waipiro Bay surf guide

Waipiro Bay is a decent surf spot situated on the east coast. It's known for its laid-back vibe and variety of breaks spread across the massive bay. The area features some solid surf waves, with the surf culture being welcoming to newcomers and locals alike. Getting there involves a bit of a drive, but it's worth it, especially when the swells are right.

When the swell comes from the SouthEast or NorthEast and is about 0.6 meters (2 ft) or bigger, the waves here can really pick up. The pointbreaks at the southern end of the bay offer some fun rides. Kitties is a more chill spot closer to the beach, while Frog Rock offers shorter, faster waves that end with a bang against the rocks. For those with more experience, Creek delivers a fast, hollow ride. The beachbreaks can also be above average, particularly when the tide is mid to high, and there are rocky outcrops on the north end that tend to hold more waves. Most of the waves break over a mix of boulders and sand, making it a versatile area to surf.

To get to Waipiro Bay, head east from Gisborne on Wainui Road (State Highway 35), then continue north to Te Puia Springs before taking a right onto Waipiro Road. Just keep an eye on the steep gravel road as you make your way in. The spot is pretty open, so you can usually claim a place to ride your waves anywhere along the bay, especially when conditions are good. Surfing here is best suited for intermediates, so come prepared to paddle out and enjoy the vibes.
