Waiwhakaiho surf guide

Waiwhakaiho is a surf spot located near New Plymouth, known for its rivermouth waves and sandbars. It’s a spot that can be a little hit or miss, but when it's working, it can provide some decent sessions. The area tends to attract a crowd, so it's good to be respectful out there and keep the vibes friendly.

This spot generally works best on mid to high tides, with the southwesterly swell really making it pop. Waiwhakaiho picks up more swell than nearby Fitzroy, offering both lefts and rights that can take you back into the river flow or down the beach. The surf here can handle swell sizes starting from around 1 foot (0.3 meters) and is best surfed by intermediate surfers. When the wind is coming from the southeast, you’ll find the waves are even more enjoyable.

To get there, you can either paddle across the Waiwhakaiho River from the breakwater at the eastern end of Fitzroy Beach or take a walk along the coastal walkway. Just remember, the spot can get crowded when the waves are good, so being courteous to other surfers is key to enjoying your time at Waiwhakaiho.
