Walton Rocks surf guide

Walton Rocks, often referred to as Power Plant by some locals, is a surf spot that boasts a unique atmosphere thanks to its backdrop of a large nuclear power plant. This area offers a mix of sandy beaches and natural reefs, making it a popular destination for surfers looking for something a bit different. While it’s a place with its history, like the jetty that used to create epic waves, it still manages to produce decent surf sessions today.

The surf at Walton Rocks works best with a NorthEast swell, handling sizes from about 2ft (0.6m) and up to 12ft (3.7m). Surfers can find both left and right breaks over sand, making it versatile for different riding styles. While it's a spot suitable for beginners, those more experienced can also find enjoyment here. The preferable wind direction is SouthWest, and it’s best to surf here during low to mid tide for the best results.

Another point to note is that the cooling water from the nearby power plant brings some warmth to the lineup, especially in winter. This makes it a bit more inviting for surfers who are not a fan of colder waters. Locals often joke that you don’t need any fancy equipment to enjoy the waves here, so it’s a chill spot to hang out and catch some surf.
