More about Walton Rocks surfspot

Some locals refer to this spot as Power Plant, owing to the large nuclear power plant situated directly behind the pristine foreshore environment. Older surfers reminisce about the huge jetty that was constructed to allow ships to offload the massive pieces of fission engineering needed to construct the reactors. That jetty, which has long since been removed, reportedly produced some of the best and longest waves in Florida. Walton Rocks still shapes some sweet peaks, thanks to the dead coral and sponge reef formations that are scattered along this stretch of coast. Optimum in a NE swell on lower tides up to about 12ft faces.

Cooling water from the nuclear reactor is discharged into the line-up, supplying a nice warm current for less hardy surfers in winter. Locals don’t seem to think there’s any rogue isotopes running around; they say you don’t need a Geiger counter to surf here. They say.
